Newborns

Neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM) physicians use a whole-person approach to care, a necessary perspective for infants whose bodies are rapidly developing, growing, and adapting. Many parents seek our care because NMM physicians are trained not just in standard medical diagnosis and treatment, but also in the subtle evaluation of how a baby’s muscles, nerves, and bones work together. Gentle osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) can help support healthy movement, ease common newborn tensions from birth, and make your baby more comfortable as they grow. For some families, our holistic focus provides an added layer of support alongside regular pediatric visits.

Another reason parents consider osteopathic care is its potential to aid in feeding, digestion, or sleep issues. Some babies feel tightness in the neck, jaw, or diaphragm after birth, such as from a long labor or a fast delivery, that can make breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or settling to sleep harder. NMM doctors trained to work with infants use extremely light touch to assess and gently encourage normal motion in these areas. Many parents find that when their baby is more comfortable and moving well, feeding and soothing can become easier.

Safety is a central concern for any parent, and osteopathic care for infants is designed with that in mind. When treating infants, NMM physicians use techniques that are exceptionally gentle: often no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a peach. When performed by a properly trained clinician, OMT for babies is safe, and serious complications are extremely rare. Importantly, osteopathic physicians are also fully licensed medical doctors who can identify when a concern requires standard medical treatment, referral to a specialist, or urgent care. Our combination of medical training and careful, hands-on assessment helps ensure that osteopathic care for infants is both safe and supportive as part of your child’s overall care.
